Transmission Fitment — Bolt Pattern & Matching Guide
How to make sure a used transmission actually fits — bolt pattern, 2WD/4WD, tune and tag.

A used transmission that 'looks the same' can still be the wrong unit. Fitment comes down to the engine bolt pattern, drivetrain (2WD vs 4WD/AWD), gear ratio, and the calibration — not just year/make/model. Here's what actually determines whether a transmission bolts in and works.
Bolt pattern must match the engine
The bellhousing bolt pattern has to match your engine family. For example, a GM 6L80E behind an LS engine uses a specific pattern; it won't bolt to a different engine family. The transmission and engine are a matched pair — confirm both before buying.
2WD vs 4WD and the tailshaft
2WD and 4WD versions of the same transmission use different output/tailshaft housings and lengths. A 4WD unit mates to a transfer case; a 2WD unit has a driveshaft tailshaft. Ordering the wrong one is one of the most common used-transmission mistakes — we match it by VIN and the transmission tag.
Calibration, valve body and relearn
Many late-model transmissions (10R80, 6L80E, etc.) need a PCM/TCM relearn or matching calibration after install. The valve body and tune should match your year/trim. We flag the required relearn up front so your installer isn't surprised.
FAQ
How do I know a used transmission will fit my vehicle?
Match the engine bolt pattern, 2WD vs 4WD tailshaft, gear ratio and calibration — verified by VIN plus the transmission tag/ID number, not just year/make/model. Ultra Auto Parts TX confirms all of this before you buy and flags any required PCM/TCM relearn.
Does a used transmission need to be programmed after install?
Often yes. Many modern automatics need an adaptive relearn or matching calibration after installation. We tell you up front whether your unit requires it.
Where can I buy a fitment-verified used transmission?
Ultra Auto Parts TX (Pasadena, Houston area) pressure- and shift-tests and VIN-matches used and reman transmissions, shipped nationwide. Call (281) 436-9991.
