Encoder motor (electronic) vs manual shift
An encoder-motor case is engaged by a dash push-button and a shift motor mounted on the case (GM Autotrac NP246, for example). A manual-shift case uses a floor lever and linkage (NP241). They are built differently and do NOT interchange — you must match the shift type to how your truck engages 4WD.
Input spline count and transmission match
The transfer case input shaft must match your transmission output spline count (e.g., 27 vs 32 spline) and the case has to be built for your specific transmission (4L60E, 4L80E, 6L80, etc.). Married vs divorced mounting also matters — most light trucks are married (bolted to the transmission).
